Ice Sculptures

It is May 2nd and our lake is already started to clear - this is very early for this to happen. One day we had a strong wind and it blew the ice onto the shore on the west side of the lake. It looks like a bunch of ice cubes piled up. Brenda came to visit us at the lake and so we had to tour the lake, of course, starting with the ice. Since the piles are partly on the shoreline they will remain there now until they melt. Apparently some years the ice has piled up as high as 20-30'. It is amazing to see the force of the ice where it pushed up docks.

  1. Does the ice do that every year? I've never seen nor heard of it!

  2. The ice piles up if the wind blows hard enough in one direction. At that point, the ice has already broken loose from the edges of the lake and so is floating freely. The wind will push it from one end of the lake to the other so one day you may have a bay completely clear and then the next day it will be full of ice again.
